Heard something about it on the radio. But what does that have to do with Israel?

I am going to go ahead and split it, seeing as Israel is a an older topic that has in fact gone off topic.

I would see this attempted action to be very related to Israel. These terrorists, though they may not be of the same nationality or orgnization as those who attack Israel currently are part of the same extremeist Islamist movement.

Well, in that sense, yes. But it's not directly related - it's not carried out by Hezbollah, it's not directed against Israeli aircraft, it doesn't even appear to be in retaliation for the Israeli vrs. Hezbollah-in-Lebenon conflict.

Therefore, it really doesn't belong on the Israel topic, which was what I was saying.

3rd link is buggered, and about the last link, good lord... They are caught with a substantial amount of money and they have phones that they suspect will be used internationally. In English, they have a lot of money and they are involved with things outside the US. And we decide to give them a 200k bail amount? That means they only gotta come up with 20k cash to post bail even though they should be considered a flight risk. *Shakes head* I'm too lazy to do some comparisons now, but it would be interesting to see what kind of allegations for "lesser offenses" have drawn significantly higher bails.

Just read the BBC one (BTW Kraken, thanks for posting that. I missed it on the news.) and there seemed to be a lot of talk about it being unprecedented damage had it been successful which raises a lot of questions to me. I don't know how many people were to have been on those planes but it seems like a bit of a stretch to say that blowing those planes up over water would be unprecedented destruction. If this is correct then that would mean there were plans to blow these things up over a group of people or possibly at an airport with very large explosive devices. Just random thoughts, and in reality it's probably just a case of officials trying to sensationalize it a bit (not that I'm downplaying the story by any means) to make it sound worse than 9/11.

Since when do you only have to pay a tenth of your bail to get out of jail? Of course 200k isn't all that hard if the plot was well funded. But since there were ten of them, 2 mil might be a wee bit more difficult. And I was reading about this last night. BTW, these guys were caught in Britain, Nuke, not the US.

Oh, the money launderers, I thought you were talking about the airline plot that was disrupted in the UK.

Er, there were 20 something terrorists, not 10. 6 - 10 planes was the range the authorities gave originally. I think now they are saying 9...

OK, found the 10% thing. Started in 1898. It seems plausible to me that the two cases could be related. The airline plot was supposedly to involve household devices to detonate the bombs, the Ohio kids had a bevy of cell phones that could be modified to detonate explosives. The plot would make sense and actually be a rather ingenious move. Liquid explosives inside a 32 oz cup is pretty inocuous, and if someone's using a phone on a plane that's no big surprise. Really hard to stop without prior knowledge.

Except it's illegal to use a cell phone on a plane. So it wouldn't be innocuous at all. But I get your point. A higher bail should have been posted.. though I find it hard to believe any bail bondsman is going to be very eager to post these guys bail. And if he isn't, then they have to come up with 400k themselves.

I stand corrected, no cell phones used for the latest airline plot. The detonators were supposed to have been disposable cameras. Pop the lense out of the flash and use that to spark the bomb. The bomb was hydrogen peroxide. I'm sure it was a higher concentrated form than the $1 brown bottle at Walgreens (3%) H2O2 is pretty unstable in high concentrations so I'd imagine they probably used something around 25-30%. For more information on the destructive power of higher concentrations see the Kursk and the HMS Sidon.

The really bad part about this stuff is that it is stored in the bottom of a Gatorade bottle and died to match the drink, so they could literally drink out of it to prove it was safe to a screener if asked.

Actually, it wouldn't matter, because the explosion would kill them before the peroxide had time to kill them. And Peroxide is soluble in water, or Gatorade, so it would poison them if they drank out of the bottle. And I know H2O2 is highly unstable at higher concentrations. That's why they tell you not to smoke in chem lab. (Among other reasons)

Disposable cameras eh? Clever.
