Adair: Most people from the South feel the South was right during the Civil War. Just so you know slavery had very little to do with the Civil War, it wasn't until much later that people began talking about the Civil War as being about freeing the slaves. Any book written in that era talks about states rights as being the main factor in it. It's only the books written after the fact, in particular after the civil rights movement that talk about slavery as a major factor.
According to the Constitution the federal government can't tell the states what to do except for in a few explicitly listed areas. The federal government had been passing laws that they did not have the authority to do and that's the main reason why the South split. Personally I think they had the right idea but went about it the wrong way.
As a matter of fact Lincoln told one of his generals that his duty was to preserve the Union, and if freeing the slaves was the best way to do that then he would release them, if keeping them as slaves would be the best way to preserve the Union then he would keep them as slaves. </history lesson>
