I'm thinking when I'm browsing for a laptop I'll lug aroudn an Ubuntu LiveCD. From what I've read, it is one of the best distros (certainally better than Mandriva) for laptops.
Of course, I don't know what other distros are good for that sort of thing... How is FC, windy?

Fedora Core 4 on a Thinkpad T-42 laptop:
wireless -> very good (ask it to start at boot, it takes a few seconds and it'll start the card, find the closest network and thats that.. I've had very few issues with it)
graphics support -> spiffy (livna offers rpms for ati and nvidia graphics cards, which allows you to have 3D acceleration and play games like Unreal Tourny.. (I've tried the demo for 2004.. it runs quite well.. I believe it runs better in linux than windows) (without the livna drivers it runs alright, but no 3D support) (mdk offers I'm pretty sure what are the exact same thing in their stuff you actually buy..)
xfce -> able to install everything from the extras yum repo.. but its easier to just grab the dependencies and use the graphical installer (no longer included off the disk =-( )
updating -> yum/apt/up2date (I'm still learning yum.. seems to work quite well.. installs dependencies for you, lets you check for updates etc..)
eclispe -> this kinda surprised me.. it was listed as an option when I was installing, so I said sure, and it installed a special edition of eclispe and it's java stuff.. so when you run javac from the terminal it gives you a rather nice description of whats wrong, instead of the standard # errors, look at this line (which isnt always accurate)...
startup/shutdown -> quick startup, quick shutdown (relitivly) (I mention this because mdk didnt shut down my computer.. it shut itself off and not my computer (left hdd and usb devices all running, but screen off).. not sure why and couldnt find much on it...)
comes with open office 2.0 beta, which I'm happy with.. its nice..
*shrugs*
I like it 'cause its simple and I'm lazy..
though, no central cp is somtimes frustrating.. I have to track down the apps occasionally.. xfce appfinder works well for that actually..
I've heard good things about SuSe.. though, you have to pay for their spiffy version.. their free version doesnt come with much from what I've heard...

Hobbs FTW!
eclipse is a very powerful ide
http://eclipse.org/
for all kinds of programming eclipse is definitely at the top of its game
and even accepted as a standard ide in some academic circles
tho i have to admit the usability has a bit of a learning curve
