Urran- I'm no expert on the game yet, but I'd say fire because I like doing a lot of damage to a lot of people. Earth is more protective and doesn't specialize in mass damage. Of course, you can learn both earth and fire skills and change between a fire and earth elementalist anytime that you want in the game by adjusting your attributes; they are redistributable in town.
Nuclear- It's annoying that there is no list of skills in the instruction manual, but I guess you could look them up online. As of now I don't know which skills are really good. As for character creation, all you really start off with is a profession/class and basic equipment suited to the class, plus something like 5 attribute points.
