Byzantine, WRE, Goths (et al.), Vandals, Huns?

Persians, Sarmatians (Early Russians/Steppe People), Pontic remnants... Rome WAS the god of the Mediterranean, and after it fell... there was ntohing worth mentioning. The ERE (henceforth "Byzantine" [note: i hate that term. they called themselves romans, and as far as im concerned, thats what they were until 1453] was slow to organize, and the WRE wasnt there very long, being conquered by other groups... not necessarily Mediterranean or landed groups either, just groups.

Theres really not a whole lot that can be gathered... You know that after the fall of the Roman Empire there was a serious power vacuum, and not much was there until Charlemange came around, and then he died, and it was just aboot status-quo till that damn island got its act together =-P

Id say stick with what we have and maybe we can do a sort of time progression thing? Give us history nerds a chance to look over things in regards to whats aplicable =-P

Each round we move forward unless we find something else that interests us.

Hmmm. Well, what could be done, is just despense with the world view altogether and stick the entire thing in ancient greece. Pelopennsian War. More than enough races, and all kinds of spying going on. Spartans and Athenians would be the premier indy races... and you could grab the Thebans for a spy race. Lots of city states to choose from.

The worldwide view for any time period except right after Rome fell can't really be done, there was always someone who had a grip on everyone else, until you get so far back that its not really interesting anymore. I suppose something could be worked out where you move through time like Neo said, starting with the Sumerians and Old Kingdom Egyptians, and Akkadians, and a few others, and moving up until about the Hittites, but then you'd have to abandon it, because the Persians pwned everyone until Alex kicked their butts, and very soon after Rome started up, and nothing really interesting happens until Rome falls. There's prolly a small time period in there before Rome but after Alex that has kingdoms of comparable strength, but they all spoke greek, and basically shared the same culture. Then Rome barreled through and took over. Then pretty much nothing happened expect variations on the theme of Rome pwning until Rome fell.

And yes, I know the Vandals and Ostrogoths and whatnot didn't do much to fill in the power vacuum, but then no one really did until France and England starting pounding on each other. But it's better than pretty much any other time I can think of.

All people of the same basic language and race, just different polises? Can you hear bo-ring? If you mix the Persians in then it's a dichotomy, without it it's boring. Nah, I don't much like that idea.

And how many would we have anyways, that people have heard of? You named three right there, and then maybe there's Ithaca and some other small states, but nothing thrilling. Civ had the right tack.

You still don't have a spy race, and the Basque won't work. They've been around for so long by doing NOTHING whatsoever for their entire friggin HISTORY, its hard to have a war when you have no enemies. It was basically this: Move to Spain, sit there and do nothing for the next several thousand years.

However, if you are absolutely insistent on Pre-Roman you could use the Hebrews or the Phoenicians for a spy race. Phoenicians had no real land based military, great navy of course, but they mostly traded, giving them spy contacts everywhere. And a massive economy of course.

Pre-PERSIAN? Are you crazy? There aren't enough cultures that were in contact with each other to make a decent prom game before the persians. I suppose if you took a huge slice of time and lumped the Akkadians, Sumerians, Old Babylonians, Old-New Kingdom Egyptians, Hittites and some of the LEvant cultures you could do it, but so few of them would have actually ever met each other that it would be as laughable as Genghis Khan fighting... Belisarius. (A rather good Roman general that lived and fought right during the time the ERE was becoming Byzantium, he along with Justinian took back large chunks of the WRE, but in the process bankrupted the Italian peninsula and Constantinople of men and money so much that they couldn't fight off the fresh waves of invaders.)
