I think you may misunderstand, Rudder: curb here means a total amount of land available to all players put together, not each.

Kind of like a massive continent that can be colonized by players, first come first served. Come to think of it, that could be an interesting twist - start people in the middle and branch out toward the sea. Coastal lands are always more valuable than landlocked areas, so battles could be focused on strategically useful provinces. Reckless expansion in the wrong direction would quickly lead to weakened borders, which could provide the limiting factor that people here are looking for.

Not sure how far you wanted to take the provinces idea, but if it's a direction you want to go, why not make different province types serve different functions? Coastal for economic and war purposes, plains for farming, mountains as natural defenses, etc. Could all be reflected in the OP/DP and output aspects of the game.

Stop me before I get carried away.

No Shadow, its perfectly plausible. Graphically, we could be making our own Civ game here. But yeah. I doubt we'll make a specified landmass shape. More or less a map with randomly generated resources and give set starting spots. Hopefully with x amount of space between. That way, you can expand without having to worry about encroachment right off the bat.

That has a whole set of coding difficulties. I love the current stream of ideas, because the two main ones: limiting total land, and doing provinces, might be done in an afternoon and tested in a week. It's dirt cheap to do, so much that it's no risk if we later roll it back. The other ideas would take much more time.

Something equally cheap would be to fiddle with our numbers, by the way, but all the magic's in coming up with the numbers. :)

Without bringing geographical location into the picture, there could certainly be different types of provinces. Some could be best for indy, some for farming, etc. Optimizing your land for your strategy could be the incentive for taking land, but taking too much, or the wrong type, would quikcly lead to imbalances that you can't support.

Ex, if a farmer decides to take a ton of land and ends up with a mountain range (just names and numbers, no actual location required)... his strat takes a hit and he isn't being as productive as he could with his land.

Bumptastic.

I'm totally and utterly swamped with crap right now, but I do want to revisit this in about 3 weeks time when life is potentially tolerable again. What say you guys?
