Alrighty, the flipside of diplomacy, war.
Chances are, you're going to be a prime target when you first join the game. There's no way around it. I tried. I failed. I did, however, got quite a bit of experience from it.
When you declare war, you must be polite but absolutely firm. You must show where you stand and be ready to fight for that. If you believe you are right, then whether you are powerful has no bearing. Even ig you die fighting, you can restart, and you will be respected, or at least not mistaken for a coward.
As for behavior during war, there's an old adage, "All's fair in war and lunch." Okay, so that's the Team Rocket version, but still, it has a point. (Pokemon Jhoto, Episode introducing Seviper.) Forget lunch, but war is right. there is nothing you cannot do. Do remember your goals, though. accomplish what you must with the least bloodshed, and your opponents might understand that you did what you believed, and, yes, they may become your allies.
If you've been warred, chances are, you did something to deserve it. What? If it was intended, then you must face the war head on, firm, but nevertheless polite. Attack back with force, and hope to end the conflict soon.
Also, get others to help you, but you must be honourable and polite in order to do that.
So, in short, be honourable, play fair, be nice, and war will be to your advantage regardless of who starts it.
Of course, when all else fails... that's why you have the million otters stored...
