An apple rolls down a hill in merry old England. A mole picks it up and makes a hat out of it. Then, as if possesed, it starts traveling north for no apparent reason. It is soon joined by otters, squirrels, hares, and mice, all curious about the strange creature. They travel to the northern cold, where they befriend two warbands, making a clan.
