all computers have different ips
'cept when you're behind a router.. then you get 192.168.1.x or somthin.. it 'shares' the ip..
the ip is, from what I get, a sort of mailbox when you sign on the internet.. your address is plastered on the mailbox and packets come in and you can send packets from it..
no two computers can have the same ip address...
correct me if I'm wrong though

All the computers at my school have the same IP address, as well as all the computers at my local library.windhound wrote: all computers have different ips

Actually, they don't. On a network, each machine has an individual IP. However, these are private addresses, meaning that they are confined to that particular network. The outside world (the Internet) sees only the IP of the network gateway router. Using PAT (Port address translation), it can make a one-to-many address mapping based on port numbers of a router. It maps a port number to each local network IP. It's rather complicated.
