It's also important to use the right format for the images, and to optimize them to reduce bandwidth issues:
Using Corban's pic:
Optimized JPG, 5k
Image
256 color PNG, 17k
Image
"Lossy" PNG, 12k ("lossy" PNG is only an option in Image Analyzer by Meesoft. There's a clear drop in quality, but it adds a rather artistic smearing effect.)
Image

It's best to use PNG instead of GIF for non-animated images, a 256 color(palette based) PNG is almost always smaller than a GIF. Also, it's usually best to not use any dithering when reducing colors. Dithering always leaves you with a grainy, noisy image.

Some other possibilities:

Another option, depending on how cartoony we want, is to take a regular photo and posterize it. This will make it look like a drawing, rather than a photo.

Hey here is an option for the coins:

With the front image removed (I can spend more time on this if you need me to):

Also I can easily downsize the pictures to pretty much any size needed. These particular pictures are at the highest resolution for your viewing purposes.

p.s. Thanks for the advise Drahken. It seems like that was the case when I used it last... Though I tend to like using the basic JPEG or GIF because of compatibility issues (at least for some reason that thought is in the back of my head... though I'm not exactly sure why think so... I must just be going insane.... :D )

Hey I've got some more for you:

Northlands Option 1: Image

I personally think this is a nice little clip but I don't think it quite fits for the Northlands... I'm gonna try to find something colder.

Northlands Option 2: Image

This one seems to be a bit grainy despite my efforts... yet otherwise it seems to be a decent picture...

Northlands Option 3: Image

I would say that at this point this one is probably my favorite of the batch.

Northlands Option 4: Image

While I enjoy this one quite I bit I seems to be missing something...

Of course, this is some of my worst animation. I animated this back in March, and hated it even then, but at least it shows I can animate.

If you go down to the woods today, you better not go alone
