So I was at my CompSci department's computer lab for the first time today. There are some 20 Windows machines to 5 Linux machines, true, but there /are/ Linux machines! And guess what they're running? Yep, Fedora! (I forgot to check which version, servers run Core 2.) And what is the default desktop? XFCE!
Computing bliss!

(On SUSE, I still use KDE of course. :D)

Our thoughts run similar. Although you can't beat XFCE's startup time. :D

I think they just serve different purposes, goals, and niches.

spiffy = )

why do the servers run core 2?
surely it'd be a bit better to upgrade, given they're now two full versions behind..
*shrugs*

Servers often don't run the latest and greatest distros. Stability is key, and sometimes the downtime involved with upgrading must be avoided.

but security also comes into play..
I would think (hope) core 4 would be more secure and stable than core 2
one hour of downtime during one day to upgrade a server should be acceptible..

*shrugs*
as long as its runnin' I 'spose its fine
the whole "if it aint broke, dont fix it" mentaility ;)

Huh.
I lost my train of thought.
Why do you hope for core 4 would be more secure and stable than core 2
one hour of downtime during one day to upgrade a server should be acceptible:-) What do you look like?

FC2 is still supported, so I would think that it is just as secure.

Also, oftentimes people will heavily patch some packages with special modifications, and it would take a long time to rebuild all that.

They've upgraded them since then...
jbarbero@attu3 ~ $ cat /etc/redhat-release
Fedora Core release 4 (Stentz)

I said FC2 a few months ago, right? It appears the current uptime is 79 days, so I'd bet the upgrade occurred about then. No way to tell, of course.
