I don't like Spartans or Thebans. Please consider alternatives, Neo and Volkov.
Also, NO-ONE apart from us seems to have heard of these mysterious Sapraba:
http://www.google.com/search?q=sapraba& ... S:official
Theuroporai also draw a blank:
http://www.google.com/search?q=search?h ... tnG=Search
Chrysapides have about 2 hits...?
Thessalians, again, are a set of people and not a class. In addition, they appear to be Greek, not Macedon.
Toxotes seems to be just the Greek word for Archers. So why not call them Archers???
German: Skirmishers seem to be a Ranged troop. How so? Explain!
Please either explain or change these terms!
I've highlighted them in red at:
http://numsum.com/spreadsheet/show/13106
(Chrysapides, Theuroporai, Thessalians, Thebans, Toxotes, Spartans, Skirmishers, Sapraba)

Saprabra is an old pontic (i think) word for Spearmen... dont remember where I picked it up, but it sounded cool.
I have also seen it denoted as "Eastern Spears"... Huge line or block of spears with something resembling a tower sheild made of Mesh wood per man, and a 4 foot spear for poking.
---
Theuroporai = Skirmishers = Light ranged troops... I explained this already and people told me to leave it the hell alone because I was getting too technical. To the common man a skirmisher, apparently, is a geurilla-type warrior, which, to me, is utterly absurd.
I explained this elsewhere, I was told to leave it alone.
---
Skirmisher = Lightly armed (probably wool with a dagger for self defense) soldier who carried Javelins/Spears to throw at oncoming troops... when their supply was exhausted they would either leave the field, or look for Havelins/Spears that were thrown at them.
I explained this elsewhere. I was told to leave it alone. *shrug*
---
I also explained Chalksapides and Chrysapides... Macedonian Phalanx which used a thracian pike... 21 feet long as opposed to the greek which never exceeded 6 or so.
---
The Greek word for archer, is indeed Toxote. So sure, Archer works.
Ask the people. It works either way with me, I just liked the word, and thought others would as well.
---
Spartan, Theban, Thessalian etc was Volkovs baby...
If it were up to me we'd have Phalanx, and Armoured Phalanx, but we have to have one word, so theres no way for me to break down distinctions in Phalanx types, and since thats really all that the greeks had, theres no way to show differing troop types without using the names of the peoples of particular city-states since each city-state had its own way of phalanx fighting, though the idea was generally the same!!!!!
---
"Thessalians" were a sort of Hoplite Cavalry that belong to a tribute city of Macedon... time-tables Beatles... We werent given timetables. As far as I see it, everything before Alexander goes.

Why not use names nobody's heard about? I mean, most people have never heard of Redwall or mice with swords, but we use that theme. Why not use these historical terms. It won't affect gameplay, people will be just as happy with Light Infantry whether it's called a skirmisher, a warrior, whatever. If we want, we can put a dictionary of historical names in the game guide, to go along with the regular FAF dictionary.
Personally, I think the Historical names are cool, even if I've never heard of them before. I'd guess most people will agree.

I think people are missing my point...
1. Spartans and Thebans, Spartans and Thessalians, still NEED to be revised. We can talk on AIM over how to simplify Armoured Phalanx.
2. My problem with Sapraba, Theuroporai, and Chrysapides is NOT that they're un-Anglo-Saxon. My problem is that there is no external reference at all for these words, in other words, how do we know their veracity?
3. You've explained Skirmishers and Toxotes, so those can stay. Thanks.

Beatles, the problem is, there was exactly one kind of fighting unit for the Greeks. The phalanx, aka, the Hoplite Phalanx. There is quite simply nothing else we can use unless you want to use stuff from 1000 years before the time period we are talking about, and even then, we don't actually know the names. Spartans and Thebans are there because there is nothing else to use. They didn't have chariots, or cavalry, otherwise I would have put that.
Thessalians can be replaced, though Neo will not like it. They are cavalry. But there has to be some way to distinguish the Macedonian phalanx from the Greek one. They used big, 16 foot (not 21 Neo) pikes, greeks ranged from 6 to 12, but never much above 12.
Sapraba I have heard of, in books and on shows, the other two I have not, at least until recently.

1. That's all right, I changed the Greek lights to Peltasts and the Heavies to Hoplites.
2. So Thessalians -> Horsemen? Sounds great to me.
3. Sapraba you may have heard of but I want a tangible reference for any troop name I'm going to use in the game, and that's final. This means that Chrysapides, Theuroporai, and Sapraba MUST be validated.
Neo linked me to an interesting page yesterday (the link is at my other computer) that I'm sure he'd be happy to show you too, on Macedonian troop names. If you can dig out some reasonable names from there, great.

1. Hmm. I suppose that works, even if the Peltasts weren't exactly hand to hand fighters.
2. Yes, Thessalians were cavalry essentially.
3. The names he has given are not very well known, but they do exist. A quick and dirty Google search didn't turn up anything, but I saw that site you were talking about, and those names do appear there. I'll see what I can turn up.

Wait, why? I thought that was settled.
You won't take two word names, and that's the only way to distinguish the macedonian phalanx from the hoplite/greek one. Unless we use Chrysapides.
I know neo loves his Theuro's, but they were archers, plain and simple, and they can be changed to that. Sapraba are infantry. So just call them that if you can't accept Sapraba as a name.
