Football is the man's sport, wanker football (sometimes referred to as futbol) is the "sport" that's basically a relay race using a ball instead of a baton. The principle difference is a team scores when the other team botches the hand off. As long as neither team botches the hand off they will take the ball from one end to the other as fast as they can for 90 minutes, at which point they both get 1 point.

BTW I really am gonna try to catch at least one game of the World Cup this year.

Since the shoutbox is overheating, set GD on fire, eh? ;)

I don't much care what you Americans think of football; it's my favorite athletic game anyway. (& most of the world's....)

We don't have to see eye-to-eye on it, as indeed in many other issues America doesn't see eye-to-eye with the world. You play your football in kevlar, we'll play ours. :)

Hey, you lived in WA for a while.

I play futbol all the time. And go to my friend's house to watch the first 15-20 mins of every match during our lunch break. ;)

Brazil all the way!

I do still live in WA. That does not mean I see eye-to-eye with many Americans, and until America grants me citizenship, I will continue to refer to myself as an European. For not only in customs and habits am I European, but also legally.

WA? What's that stand for? Western America?

And Urran, which is the better sport, soccer or football?

What are the consequences of a yellowcard, and how does one get one?

A foul, or several fouls. Or some other violation of fair play, but mostly fouls.

And a foul is defined rather broadly, but it's basically a deliberate attempt to down another player.

After a yellow card, if you commit something deserving of another one, you get sent off (red card). There also may be inter-match consequences of it, but I don't remember those.

Players sometimes make obscene gestures at the referee after a yellow card, and that gets them a red card. Only sometimes, of course, but it's rather immature.

Is that any attempt to down the player, regardless of what you use to do it? i.e. if you don't use your hands it's not wrong type of thing?

And on a red card, do you leave for a few minutes like hockey, do you get ejected and someone has to come off the bench to replace you like most sports, or is it something crazy like you leave and nobody can replace you?

The crazy one. The whole team suffers - a player short.

Indeed. It's in the spirit of fair play. The team shouldn't just be able to shrug it off without any retribution.

Look up David Beckham's history for a concrete example of the repercussions...

Losing a player is almost a gauranteed loss for any of our major 3 sports. I'm guessing it has the same effect in futbol?

Nope. Remember, we have 11 players out on the field in football. It is a big disadvantage, but you can overcome it. For example, Poland played a portion of their match against Germany shorthanded, and just barely lost on a goal in stoppage time.

American football has 11 players on the field to, but they would still get pwned by being 1 man short.

Another thing, what advantages does a futbol team get from having a home field advantage?
