Do you think this is a scam or is could there be some truth in it?

Most types of "Free Energy" tend to not be effective or they don't reach the point where buying the materials pays off with enough energy. Even if he did generate that much power. 5x a cell phone battery, it depends on how big his generator is. Odds are, it isn't small.

McCarthy claims it provides five times the amount of energy a mobile phone battery generates for the same size, and does not have to be recharged.
5 times the energy for the same size as a cell phone battery.

I wonder if he has filed for a patent? If so, I wonder where? Until I read some information on how exactly the device is supposed to work, I am going to be a bit suspicious.

Oh... It just got slashdotted. Definately a hoax then.

Free energy devices fall into some simple categories:

1. Simple design: violates First Law of Thermodynamics.

2. Average design: violates Second Law.

3. Cunning design: draws its energy from a ubiquitous source (e.g. Sun).

This one seems to be a simple one: violates the First Law. :)

ok lets set up the scenario
he builds a small device with tiny magnets and a few blinking lights (hidden micro cell not included)....!*laughs*

No really.....
if he was able to pulse oscillate a bipolar-magnetic core, floating 'suspended' in a magnetic field. (no baring, no physical contact, no resistance)
sampled the oscillation, wrap it with pick up coils.
he could proly do just that, about 2500 micro volts.

a unit comparable to generate enough energy to be effective, say for a city wide distribution, is slim.
It would be a frightening thing to see, especially if you knew how fast that core was spinning.

I say it should be fully investigated, new tech is born everyday!

pretty good post, about as far as I got on slashdot..

probably a hoax. if it were not, they could atleast post a picture of the box and maybe a basic diagram

Meh_

if they can define dark matter, who says they cant break a few laws of physics.
How about computers, they broke several milestones.
The first computer I owned, was a hand held calculator, very basic in its programming but functional for its purposes.
And now we can buy a watch sized computer, capable of browsing the net, phoning a friend, cam-conferencing, playing games and storing tons of data

what next?

A pocket sized key to my car that holds the fuel cell……
No more oil tit

None of that achievement violated any of the laws of physics observed until then. Nor does dark matter.

Now, all we have to go on is our observations, so it's possible that the First or Second Laws are incorrect. However, it is rather unlikely.

It's a hoax. No such thing as free energy. There's some speculation on something called "vacuum energy", that could be drawn on for vast amounts of energy, but a 100% efficient generator is flat impossible. You can have very high effiencies, but never 100%. And of course even if you could create one that is 100% efficient, you could never go OVER 100% As Beatles said, it violates the laws of Thermodynamics. Especially the third law which defines Entropy.

It's a media ploy. Simple as that.

And the slashdotter's against fusion power are idiots. Fusion's only problem is getting above the 50% mark on returns vs. investment. That is, right now it only produces about as much power as you put into it to get the fusion processs started. The highest mark it's gotten too so far is 65%. That is, it's returned 15% more power once the materials were fusing than it took to get them to start fusing.

No, it's the second law, as I said. Basically:

1. Over-100%: Violates First Law
2. 100%: Violates Second Law

I'm sure you meant that, though.
