Well, I decided to scrap windows and spent 2 days and nights downloading SuSE... Now I burned it off to dvd and tried to get it working but its gone all gimpy and told me to f off *laughs*. I tried to load it in VMware aswell and I get the same thing, so heres a screenshot,

it happens when i try GNOME or KDE and I don't fancy downloading it again on a crappy internet connection :(

I'm sick of windows cause while its stable most of the time it decides to crash when I'm doing something important. Once it's on I'm hoping I'll be able to use mIRC in WINE or something...

Any help would be appreciated, I have a 4gig odd ISO sitting on my hard drive so if needed I can modify that and burn it off again... but this is just annoying me now *laughs*

The problem isn't with your ISO, but it seems not to be finding your DVD-reader. Is there any place during the installation (I don't remember exactly) where you can specify the device to try for the reader? If there is, then try, in this order:
/dev/hdc (because it's what is indicated)
/dev/dvd
/dev/hdb (maybe it was this one?)
/dev/hdd (trying further up)
/dev/hde (depending on how many devices you have, go up ad infinitum.)

Hope this helps.

Well first off, thanks for the quick reply, I'm still on the gimpy Winblowz at the minute as I couldn't find anything in the installer though, I'll try again after dinner see what I can find.....

On a side note, is it easy enough to get WINE running?

Hmm might put linux on pc, saves me formating it again when gondor bogs it all up with his bloody porn *laughs*

EDIT: trying it on pc to see what happens

you're not using an external drive are you?

occasionally live disks and installers dont like them, and while they'll boot off them initially, it'll actually 'lose' the drive and complain bitterly

wine should be in the suse repos and pretty much comes in a running form, just open an *.exe or whatever with wine. some apps work fine, others great, most not really

cool, thanks for that, just tried to install it on my pc and it shouted at me and said some error resizing partition and now when i go to install it just goes black :(... It could, however be the hard disk as it's decided to kick up a stink about booting windows too.

Also, though I have external hard drives, they are all unplugged and everything is internal

ntfs somtimes doesnt resize cleanly, if thats what you're trying to do. Fedora's resizer failed, but I believe I was still able to boot off the ntfs partion, so it didnt damage it..

and I meant external cd/dvd-rom drives, reading that again it could have gone either way
but it should be alright to install linux on an external hdd, but booting off it is probably entirely dependent on your bios...

Right well it appears suse wont go onto my pc, nor will windows, any other OS'es or linux distro's you think I should try? I can't find my ubuntu disk so it looks like I'm gonna have to download that again unless you can recommend something better...

Could you try wiping the whole disk of the PC and just sticking SUSE on it? Later you can add other Linuxes, although not Windows. Even if the HD is wonky that should work.

Yeah well it's a maxor so I'm thinking its bogged up totally now, I will try putting it in my other PC and see if I can format it then try sticking suse on but for some reason now, all of a sudden when I put my gramps old 3.26gb hdd in it decided to crash through the installation, it wouldn't accept windows 2k either though so it may be something wrong with the freakin pc AGAIN (hope not)... just testing to see if I can get windows XP on the 3giger and then I'll go from there, see what happens.........

why not add windows after linux?
I damaged my grub once, threw the fedora install cd in, asked it to 'upgrade'
it went through the motions, fixxed my grub, couldnt find anything to update and exited happily, not touching any of my files or settings
not sure if you can do with with SuSe or other distros, but.. *shrug*

if you're going to wipe its easier to go ahead and make the partitions you think you'll need. I've never had much luck resizing and moving stuff around.

*shrug* I like ubuntu. but I like Gnome
Beatles and Devari are sold on SuSe, and they like KDE
Fedora is awesome and does both Gnome and KDE well, but I've never had much luck with their package and update servers. it usually cant find a file it needs or the server just isnt availible. it usually eventually succeeds, but it just annoys me. atleast if ubuntu does this, it doesnt tell me ;)

edit: gah. can you install and use windows on 3.6 gigs? I'm using a 10 gig hdd for ubuntu and I'm having problems keeping it from getting full.. just checked on vista, it wants 10 - 15 gigs.. blah

I gave windows xp a 50 odd gig partition on my laptop. it has now taken 10 gigs as swap space. I have a gig of ram too. blah

each version of windows takes up more room and greater specs to run. I believe a full win 98 install took up maybe 512mb. windows xp takes up to 4gigs, you might get away with two if you're lucky. notice I said install and use. you'll also need a few hundred megs for various antivirus, anti-spam, spyware etc. windows is not space friendly, but when you can get a 300 gig drive for around $70 I guess why worry?
