Tokaj's existence began just on two years ago -- as my Linux machine with that domain name. It wasn't on the net until some months later, and not reliably until about 6 months ago or so. Its existence is effectively terminated as its data is unrecoverable. It may return, but it must be in a different form.

If you have anything to say, feel free to do so, unencumbered by any further need of secrecy.

On the technical side of things, the harddrive is, as a coworker put it "completely trashed". Since I didn't back up any of my settings, .htaccess files, web structure, shell scripts, installed binaries, music, latest acquired data, or even an up-to-date catalogue of what it provided, it's unlikely it will ever be back in the same form. A replacement HD will be ordered for it, and it is likely I will eventually resurrect it in some shape, albeit probably a more minimalistic one. If anyone is curious what sorts of things I had on it or what sort of tricks I discovered/employed (and you have a Linux server of your own), feel free to PM me.

I'll need help with vnc eventually. I believe rdesktop works, but browser-based vnc would be spiffy
a little curious as to your security methods as well. the only thing blackbird has is firestarter (firewall) and I'm still used to windows where you have to run anti-virus, anti-spyware, ofcourse a firewall, amoung other things. feels like I'm lacking.

sorry to hear about tokaj.
make sure you do properly kill the hdd though (drill through the platters) if you have any data you dont want to resurface.. unlikely, but stuff has come off 'dead' hdds to bite people in the arse

kinda sad really, you're developing a cycle.. create something, work on it till it gets where it works nicely, then poof. first rwcenter.. now tokaj.. :(

though, restructuring is half the fun ;).. maybe build a nice gui for tokaj II.. tokajii!

Pity I never got access :).

I really ought to set up something similar in the dorm room. Though resnet insists that thou shall not run servers, I somewhat doubt they would notice, or even care. Though I would have to set it up as a router too. It would be nice if the same machine could deal with all my waste stuff too (waste is what we use for on campus file shareing). A webserver for some small stuff, like development (when I do learn PHP, which may be sooner than ever now), and possibly administration of some of the other junk.
At this point it is just a pipe dream and a few searches on Ebay/Craigslist/ASI classifieds. Will a $50 used PIII do the job?

Wow, technology devalues. I remember when we got a PII for $700 and it was sort of a bargain.
Back. I think.

I'll answer your question separately via PM to keep this ontopic.

It now seems the machine will be restored in a few weeks or so. I'll put some of the basic services of tokaj on it, to hopefully counteract this cycle windy speaks of. But I don't know yet whether I will call it tokaj, I'm inclined not to, for various reasons.

Poor tokaj, you and your vast store of interesting Beatles things will be missed. (I'm a eugoogalizer... oh man, have watched Zoolander far too many times, way more than can possibly be healthy) Anyway, that's tokaj's short but sweet eulogy.
