I can't figure out how to train troops...when I do the train option, no troops are added!

Training increases your smithies production by 25%. (Smithies are the buildings that produce troops) If you have no smithies training won't do you any good.

Yes. Blacksmiths is the name here at FAF.

And yeah, you need barracks to upkeep your troops. A good build is 90% Blacksmiths, 3% Huts, 7% Farms, sell troops to upkeep. Focus on one type of troop, as well, not all four.

Alternatively (and easier) do 50% Barracks, 3% Huts, 47% Farms, and sell food for upkeep.

I am having trouble training troops also, but I have 100 smithies and still no troops! Do I have to be out of protection to make troops?

Too be honest, 100 is not alot. Due to the game scaling, your actually gaining troops from those 100. Just very very few. And no, you don't have to be out of protection. I'd scout those turns in protection, so you have more land.
