The Kraken, which is found primarily in Scandinavian myth, was a huge sea creature. It was said to lie at the bottom of the sea for a long time and then it would rest at the surface....Like the Midgard serpent in the Norse myths, the Kraken was supposed to rise to the surface at the end of the world.

It has to stop at the pole, otherwise you could say that you were going North up or down. You can't say, I'm going up as your walking on the ground, because that implies you can fly. O_o But if you were looking from space, up would only mean North.

North - Toward the North pole. Either magnetic North (a completely physical point, determined by the Earth's magnetic field) or regular North (which I'm not sure how it's determined. Probably using some sort of mathematically calculations.)
In either case, North only goes so far. When you're on the North pole, you can only go South. Take a step, and you can go in any direction. But when you're on the North pole, everything is south.
