It snowed recently, here in Minnesota. A lot. About 2 feet in 2 different snowfalls over the course of a bit more then week.
At some point, when I was shoveling snow, it struck me that I really don't know the origin of a whole lot of you people's names. And I don't know how many of you know my origin.
I mean, sure, some people's names a self explanatory. But even then, the story of how you acquired that name would be interesting. Others... well, I haven't got a clue as to why Japan is Japan, or Arthus Arthus. So, yeah. Let us (me?) know the origin of your name.
My name came from the Redwall series, actually. Well, sort of. As a young Redwall fan, I joined a Redwall fan club. Of course, I needed a name. Since my character was an Otter, I figured "Ruddertail" would sound good. Otter's tails were often referred to as "rudders" in Redwall, anyhow.
When I went to my first promi, WBII at TSOR, I saw that it was a Redwall based promi at a Redwall club. So, I kept the name. 'Sides, I was already attached to it. And... it's just stuck, more for purposes of ID then anything, though I am rather bad at coming up with names. And, like I said, I'm rather attached to the name. So... wherever I go, be it Valhall, FEE, or here, I'm now known as Ruddertail.
(Note: If you want to prevent me from making more random, conversational posts late at night, the best thing you could do would be to prevent me from thinking of them. Therefore, you need to come up here and help me shovel snow. I'll let you lot know next time... You can probably dig Japan out, as well.)

Heh...
My Dad comes up with all kinda of nicknames. Usually from books he's read and all. Anyway, I got to be Freenhult, my sister was Rochefort (Spelling is somewhat different) and the cat was Rienbolt.
Freenhult isn't my main family nickname. I have others, but most people, Teachers, Friends, ect all call me Freenhult. It was so established that I used to be able to write it on my HW as my name.
EDIT: 2 feet? in 2 weeks? Weak. We got 2 feet in 4 days. Not to mention, a week later, It Thunderstormed, then turned into a blizzard.

The Kraken, which is found primarily in Scandinavian myth, was a huge sea creature. It was said to lie at the bottom of the sea for a long time and then it would rest at the surface....Like the Midgard serpent in the Norse myths, the Kraken was supposed to rise to the surface at the end of the world.

All I know is that I wanted a new SN for AIM but I had a mental block so I googled "good screen names," and alas, ohmyjapan16 was created.

My dad's nickname for me is "Joe", as my middle name is Joseph. Not real creative I know.
Gen. Volkov? Well, I unknowingly stole it from a friend. We both knew who the real Volkov was, and admired him. He use it first somewhere, but I thought he was Col. Volkov, not Gen. Volkov. So when I signed up for RWL, I used Gen. Volkov to distinguish myself from him.
Only later did I learn that he was Gen. Volkov as well. We made a bet on the ND-Purdue game, if ND won, I got to keep Gen. Volkov, if Purdue won, I had to change my name. Lucky for me, that was the first year of Charlie Weis's tenure, and ND smushed Purdue.
As for why I am Gen. Volkov everywhere, well, that's what everyone knew me as, no point in changing it.
