The two most successful past countries -- first, Ireland (7 wins); second, UK (5 wins) -- placed last and second-last, respectively. Their songs were absolutely pathetic.

Now I quote Wikipedia on Ireland's entry. No doubt someone will fix the... ahem... unprofessional (but true!) description:
"They Can't Stop The Spring" is a song by Irish band Dervish. On February 18, 2007, on a Late Late Show special it was chosen as the song Dervish sang at the Eurovision Song Contest 2007 in Helsinki. It is written by John Waters and Tommy Moran.

The song was the fourth to be performed at the Eurovision Final in Helsinki, after the Belarussian entry and prior to the Finnish entry.

After a long and tedious wait (for anyone who was actually still watching and hadn't fallen asleep from the sheer exhaustion of expending energy on such incessant drivel), the song eventually received its first five points from Albania at approximately 10:30 p.m., leaving Latvia and United Kingdom as the only countries with 0 points (although Ireland then gave 7 points to United Kingdom and 8 to Latvia thereby cementing itself into the last position, a position it would never relinquish). The song finished last in the competition, and with its meagre total of 5 points was the worst result in Irish Eurovision history. Such was the incredible shame of the occasion, even the United Kingdom fared better, a rarity in these times.[1]
My emphasis.

Wikipedia on the UK entry:
During the Finnish broadcasting of the Eurovision Song Contest 2007, the Finnish female announcer introduced the song as "Flying the Fag", which she immediately after corrected.
The correction was unnecessary. A big picture of the Union Jack set to a few annoying notes repeated incessantly. Anglophile Malta gave it 12 points out of sheer colonialism.

As to the winners -- nothing special, but at least music.
