So this morning I get a call from my mom telling me to get to her house quickly, so I don;t rush too much and I'm there in 10 minutes. y. As soon as I walk in I can see she's freaked out about something. Apparantly she had watched 2 guys break into her backyard and she called 911 and then she called me. They had also been beating on the door to the house but luckily did not kick it in. Of course as soon as I hear this I make a beeline for the gunsafe (my stepdad is an avid gun user but my mom abhors them) only to find that even though theres a dozen shotguns and about a half dozen rifles I don't have a single shell.

So here I am, stuck inside trying to protect my mom while the 2 men are still presumably outside. I grabbed a hunting knife to do an interior sweep of closets and such but I'm not about to do a sweep of any open spaces (read: yard or garage) without a gun of some sort, preferably a 12 guage. So I'm thinking, the cops knew for 10-15 minutes before I got there, they knew that it wasn't a false alarm, a solid visual ID had been made, the suspects described, no prior false alarms, etc so they should be there rather quickly and they're armed so they can do a perimeter sweep. So I waited. And waited. And waited. And finally an hour and a half goes by and they show up. Obviously by this point the suspects are long gone and probably died of old age but whatever.

So they ask 2-3 questions, check the backyard (but not the garage) give some lame excuse about how busy they were lately and that's why they were so late (although common sense and their body language both said they were full of shit) and left. So when I leave lo and behold there's another cop doing a speed trap 100 freaking feet away! To top it off these same jackasses had the nerve to take one look at my shotgun say that we shouldn't confront any burglars. Well wtf else are we supposed to do? Wait an hour and a half for the cops to do it or just let people continue robbing until they get bored of it? Hell someone has to do something and if the clowns that are paid to do it are too busy enforcing a speed trap then don't bitch when we do your job for you.

On a side note the street my mom lives on had the speed limit illegally dropped 15 mph overnight and the cops camp out all the time when the dept is short on cash. Any speeding ticket on that street will get tossed out in court because they set the speed limit too low, but most people just pay it and move on.

I think when I'm a little less pissed off I'll condense this down and do an op-ed to the local paper which is the ONLY thing that works for our crooked ass PD.

I don't intend this as a consolation or anything... but in Hungary, even if by some remote chance you got a gun licence, I believe a burglar can still take you to court for shooting him, if it can be proven that you attacked first. Which is ridiculous of course.

I'm sure that can happen here too. If someone illegally enters your house and you shot them, you can go to jail for shooting them.

I LOVE how broken the law is.

Not if they're not a resident... there was a creepy story about Virginia. A Japanese exchange student got the wrong address for the family he was going to stay at, so he turns up on the wrong lawn. (Or was it a she?) Anyway, the owner comes out with a gun and says "Freeze!". Not knowing that particular nuance of English, he doesn't freeze. For his pains, he gets shot and then deported. No suit against the owner.

Sure, a country's gotta protect its citizens, but there is a fine line.

It is absolutely crucial that one learn the laws surrounding firearm usage in home invasion cases as soon as you get a gun. In California if you shoot someone for being in your house you're screwed if it's done improperly. The DA in my county has came out and said he won't even bother going after a homeowner who shot an intruder but that still doesn't mean you can't be sued.

If you intentionally confront an intruder it's bad, but if you do a sweep to make sure the area is secure and see him it's not bad.

If you shoot an intruder it's bad, but if a reasonable person would feel justifiably threatened prior to shooting it's not bad.

If you shoot an intruder while he's down it's bad, but if he was still moving in a threatening manner it's not bad.

If the intruder died and you choose not to talk, it's all but impossible for them to prove anything in a criminal case.

If it's outside the home you're really skating on razer thin ice, if it's inside it can be justifiable.

Civil cases allow a lot more conjecture and do not require reasonable doubt, 51-49 is perfectly acceptable.

I'm not recommending anything here, but if you read between the lines you'll easily ascertain what many attorneys and law enforcement personnel recommend off the record.

In Georgia all you have to do is fire a warning shot. Which is nice, because all I have to do is fire it, wait for them to be all "zomg I sorry massah!" and shoot them in the face.

heh, in Texas ( i know this because i was a victim) you can shoot anyone on yer property at any time.

anyway, give the cops a break nukey. they are busy and if the cop was stationed at the speed trap during the initial call...then that is something, but he has to be ordered to go to the house and break from where he was. sounds like a miscommunication thing to me.
but!
its cool that this subject is brought up cause guess whos going to the Police Acadamy???????? :D

thats right! yours truly! hurrah!

The Kraken, which is found primarily in Scandinavian myth, was a huge sea creature. It was said to lie at the bottom of the sea for a long time and then it would rest at the surface....Like the Midgard serpent in the Norse myths, the Kraken was supposed to rise to the surface at the end of the world.
