I have no objection to legalizing illegal immigrants in batches for demonstrating specific qualities, etc. But giving them the chance that will be denied to people who are in the U.S. legally on visas that will expire -- ranging from student visas (mine) to worker visas (the infamous H-1B) to tourist and business visas -- is discriminatory and idiotic.

I would apply for U.S. residency like a shot merely to reduce my tuition payments from the current $23,000 to the resident $7,500. If you think that is mercenary, feel free to condemn me...

i agree. (im being sincere) amnisty for those who broke the law is BS. it is the hard working, law abiding immigrants
(i.e., those who have working or student visas or green cards) that have my blessing, such as yourself, not these...these....wastes...

however, i think we should sent the stinkin lot of yeahs back over seas. :P

The Kraken, which is found primarily in Scandinavian myth, was a huge sea creature. It was said to lie at the bottom of the sea for a long time and then it would rest at the surface....Like the Midgard serpent in the Norse myths, the Kraken was supposed to rise to the surface at the end of the world.

Heh, I wouldn't call them wastes. Just not give them priority over legal immigrants. I'm in favor of getting those who do work to pay takes and giving them social benefits (such as America provides), but it would be nice to have a sane priority. ;)

Kraken and Beatles essentially agreeing? And straight off, as well? Mind boggling... :P

Anyhow, I'd tend to agree. Breaking the law shouldn't get you special privileges. If the illegals get to stay at all, they should certainly be at the back of the line for citizenship.

My priorities for an immigration bill?

1: Secure the border. I don't care how. But nobody should be getting across unless they have a legal right to do so. Build a fence, an energy field, hire hundreds of thousands of agents, better surveillance, whatever. The method doesn't matter (as long as it isn't something that little kids are likely to wander into and get hurt.)

2: Reform immigration policies - make it easier for those who want to come here and become a part of the country to do so, while at the same time straining out any potential terrorists. May also want to restrict entry for violent criminals...

3: Deal with our current illegals. They should be IDed (so we can check for terrorists and other threats) and pay a fine, as well as any taxes they owe. I'm not sure exactly what to do then, though it should lead to residency, if not citizenship, eventually. Certainly citizenship for their children.

Any person born in US territory is a US citizen ergardless of the circumstances surrounding it.

I thought about trolling Kraken on this issue just for the hell of it but I won't. I think more or less everyone who is not a Mexican activist or a big business activist feels the same way Kraken, Crudderbutt, and Beatles feel.
I know the voices in my head arn't real but they usually have some pretty good ideas.

I pretty much agree, cept I think a mandatory English course (A "C" or better to pass) and possibly a stint in the Army should be on the docket if you are here illegally and wish to gain citizenship. I don't like the idea of just pure amnesty.

I said possibly, and I don't see any problem with them going into the military and wanting money, they'd make much more money there than they would picking crops or doing part time work in construction.
