How does Experience work?

I am really unsure what the point of experience is cause it doesn't seem to do anything at all.

I'm attacking someone with Defence 88 (22%)
My attack experience is 4835 (97%)

Though I still lose, on average, double that he does. I know I asked this before, but I'm clearly confused again.

If you start late in a set you will notice the effects of experience. It makes a noticeable difference only when one person has several times more.
