This topic might become significant in the next few days. Let's see who's learned what from Katrina.

Not enough people. Even though round about 1.9 million people left, there are still some that stayed. I personally think that they're fools. But hey. I know online friends that have family that didn't evacuate in New Orleans. I just hope they don't die. :x But sometimes people need to die before change can happen. Its sad. As a up and coming Meteorologist, I don't want to see people die. But it seems that no one wants to listen. Good luck to them~

I was thinking also about the Government.

Hey, on the bright side, a cockup like in 2005 could cost the GOP the election!

Murphy's law says that they will evacuate in a frenzy because of what happened with katrina and it will turn out to be unnecessary.

You should always evacuate from a Hurricane Warning area.

yes bu tthey failed miserably for katrina and now they are up their asses in a frenzy to do this one right. I think this outcoe of this will go a long way toward deciding the election for undecided voters.

Not really. Katrina taught a lesson. People that didn't evacuate for Katrina forgot what a bad storm can do. It was still a mandatory evacuation on both accounts. And the evacuation went fairly smoothly. I fail to see how that will effect the election.

A little late on the uptake, Gustav already hit and was handled fine. There was some minor flooding, but the levees held. Gustav basically sideswiped New Orleans.

Some water did go over the wall, they need to make them a bit higher, and thicker. If the storm was any stronger the walls would have collapsed under the pressure. They were lucky.

As far as the preparation went, of course they did it well, they couldn't allow another Katrina, so they took every measure they could to prevent casualties, which was good. I also do not see how this will effect the election, they did there jobs for a change, go them...

I think i will strike up a song!

OOoooo!!!
hurricanes come and hurricanes go...
if you wish to live in the path of one, you better go...
its so sad when people drown, but listen to what i say...
Waco meterologists have been predicting doomsday...
the Hurricane Katrina was such a mess....
but the chocolate lovin new orleans elected Nagin once agian...
hurricanes have happened throughout history....
so get over it! life goes on without the needy....

lord that was terrible...
anyways! Gustav was a puppy instead of "the mother of all storms" as it was predicted. pish Beatles, the Government cannot/should and cannot make such things easy!
hurricanes happen and, geeze, to agree with Freeny, people want to stay: ptthhh...

and i hate it when people refer to a storm by its given name only.
it was a freakin hurricane.
hurricane Katrina.
lord, i know a katrina and she now hates her name.

The reason it was named was to keep track of it. And because like you said, hurricanes happen. So its just an order. You remember Katrina better than the "Hurricane that hit New Orleans" better.

pah!
i know the reason Freen.
i think they should number them.
like, instead of Katrina, it could of been H1605.
besides, no one will ever let it go regardless of what the heck its called.
does anyone here remember Hurricane Hugo?
look that one up.

I do. I'm sure most people have a recollection of storms that were major. Can you recall the Tri-State tornado? Or perhaps Palm Sunday Outbreak? What about Andrew? Same prinical. I know you're not that old, but you've heard of them. And the names stick better than just random letters.
