It's not free as in price we are worried about. It's free as in freedom. If we simply 'buy' an online forum, we might end up in the same situation we are in now. When the original developer stops maintaining the software, no one else is allowed to maintain it.

My objection would just be on grounds of practicality, actually. We still lose all our board mods if we move to IPB 2, so there's no particular advantage to the software. Given that phpBB is pretty good, has regular bugfixes, and has a good modding community, I think we could find what we want there. The only issue, really, is transferring board data through various (somewhat unreliable) pieces of conversion software. If we can pull that off, however, I see no reason why not to make the switch.

There are various good pieces of forum software. I've just not wanted to let Philip and the chatbox die. But we can just archive what we have and I'm sure there are chatbox mods for most forum software.
