We're not going to upgrade the forum until we work on other FAF issues, and that's final. We've gone over this a lot, and there are few decent alternatives, the upgraders are very buggy and destroy half the content structure, we'd lose all of the patches ("plugins"), and the current solution works fine. I've patched the security holes. A forum upgrade is not in our plans, and won't be, for the next few years. We can end this particular discussion on a fair certainty.

Registration mods don't help -- captchas are broken. The best captcha is recaptcha, and if the current crop of spam gets bothersome, we might install it to just cut down on the numbers. The best spam service is Mollom, and it's free at our size. Neither has an IPB 1.3 API to it, last I checked, so we will not be implementing either until other priorities have been met, or the spam gets too bad. Currently, it isn't too bad.
