This is one of my favourites from the 1980s: The Day of the Triffids. I loved the book and I think they did a really fine job with the adaptation. They don't make a great effort to get you to suspend your disbelief, so you'll have to do that yourself, but once you do that, it turns out to be much more rewarding than if they had used gimmicks like music or weird shots to get you there.
