If the spammers could post when we couldn't then they are obviously going about it in a different manner than we are. It stands to reason that if we can figure out what they are doing differently we should be able to devise a way to filter out posts using that method. And when I say we I really mean you guys.
I know the voices in my head arn't real but they usually have some pretty good ideas.

It was possible to post during the outage - it just required a few refreshes and patience. But you could be right.

As far as I can tell, they just make accounts and post. Or post in no-user needed areas.

They could still post, because submitting the form is all they needed, not actually viewing it. You could still view topics and post.

Now there's a cracking good idea hidden there. If you ever visit a forum index page, you get a variable set on your account saying you're not a spammer. If you don't have it set, you can't post. Any genuine visitor will want -- and need -- to click on the forum index page before posting a topic.
