Today we had about 16 spam posts. Not a single link, but still, unacceptable. My current idea is to require someone's first word to contain a particular word. Perhaps it could be generated on the fly, picked from a list, or the simplest (which I incline to): just have it be one word.

Until I've time to implement this, do suggest what word you think this should be. Remember, it shouldn't be anything that might come up in a normal spam post. The simplest suggestion is just "FAF".

Rather than this, going on Nuke's suggestion, we'll set a variable on user account when they visit the forum index page.

On the posting page, if the variable isn't set, we'll just bring up a page that says "You may be a spammer, please click here to continue if you aren't" that sets the variable and brings them to the post form they were trying to get to.

Take a bit of time to do properly, that's the only trouble.

Another thought, could we add a button to the posting page so it's spam, new topic/add reply, preview topic and dummy it up so the bots hit the spam button instead of the add reply?

How about looking into MyBB? That forum is pretty nice to be honest, not sure if it's open source though, you'd have to check that.
