Urran Voh wrote: To me the last book was the saddest and most thrilling of the series...Sure JK could do without killing off some of my favorite characters, but hey she's got to keep us on edge somehow. There was also that most un-expected ending where one certain character wasn't so bad after all (don't know how much is revealed in here so far, so I won't spoil it for anyone). Will possibly write more later (once I get through the novel of this thread).
if you are refering to Snape: yes. it was a great ongoing plot twist.
i was kinda dissapointed that Draco got to be left alone without concequence for the most part.
he suffered no more humiliation or pain in this book than in any other.

The Kraken, which is found primarily in Scandinavian myth, was a huge sea creature. It was said to lie at the bottom of the sea for a long time and then it would rest at the surface....Like the Midgard serpent in the Norse myths, the Kraken was supposed to rise to the surface at the end of the world.

If I understand, he saved the trio's life at one point, and so did his mother. I think the book was trying to portray them as merely spineless, but with a touch of good as well as evil in them, rather than just the usual emotionless or pure evil type baddies. I mean, the mother protected Harry out of her love towards his son, and Rowling's always been big on the love angle.

Yeah, Draco and his mom both ended up protecting the trio. Didn't help much in Draco's case, but the trio later saved Draco's life.

remember all the hubbub about the last book getting hacked and being posted and all that? well a french teen got busted for translating the darn thing. it seems that the last book wont be published in French until late october...the book, however, is being sold in english there right now. :P
but the kid did screw up, he did his translation 3 weeks prior to its release:

i just read the last book and thought it was phenomenal. i thought it was a marvelous ending and thought the whole plot twist with snape was magnificent. i am not afraid to admit that i did not see it coming. i was too busy relying on harry's emotions towards snape to realize he might not be so bad after all. i think it would be pretty sweet to list your favorite books that you have read in order. i havent been keeping up with this topic so if its been done already please forgive me. anyways heres my list...

1. deathly hallows (7th)
2. half blood prince (6th)
3. goblet of fire (4th)
4. prisoner of azkaban (3rd)
5. order of the phoenix (5th)
6. chamber of secrets (2nd)
7. philosopher's stone (1st)

cheers

4. Order of the Phoenix

7. Philosopher's Stone

Order of the Phoenix and Goblet of Fire I found pretty much the same, only put Order of the Phoenix on top because of the Dumbledore/Voldemort fight was pretty cool.

4. prisoner of azkaban (5th)
5. philosopher's/socerer's stone (1st)
6. chamber of secrets (2nd)
7. half blood prince (6th)

the reason i put the half blood prince last was because i found it to be...ah, a breath before the final sneeze so to speak. the plot was at times intriguing and often nail biting, especially when poor old dumbledore bites the dust.
but it seemed as if the book was nothing more than an...intermission between the 5th book and the 7th.

She stated she considered the 6th and 7th to be one book essentially. But 6 books won't do for a magical story... Not to mention kids would get hernias lugging that monster around. :P

[edit] Wrong link, see post below.

It is encouraging to me[s], in these dark days,[/s] to read that Enid Blyton still outsells J.K. Rowling. Of course, this is tempered by the consideration that she is the only children's author in the world to do so, and she is a major writer by any standard (beating Shakespeare according to the UN).

Beatles, that article is over 4 years old

My list -
1. Prisoner of Azkaban
2. Deathly Hallows
3. Philosopher's stone
4. Goblet of Fire
5. Chamber of Secrets
6. Half-Blood Prince
7. Order of the Pheonix

I think one of the sadder parts of book seven is that Snape died with the idea that he had been betrayed by Dumbledore. He had been helping keep Harry safe in memory of Lily, but was then told the boy must be sacrificed. However, he did his part and passed on his message as was asked, loyal to the end.

Also, I think some people are just bitter that a children's serries has done so well. I believe it was the NewYork Times that removed it from its bestseller's list.... probably because they were getting complaints that 7 of the top 10 spots were being filled :D This was a while back though, so maybe (hopefully) the fixxed this error in judgement

That's because I pasted the wrong link. You'll notice that the BBC article didn't even touch on sales figures. My article was from July 30 of this year. Let me see if I can dig it up again...

Ah, here. From the Telegraph:
http://www.telegraph.co.uk/arts/main.jhtml?xml=/arts/2007/06/30/nosplit/boblyton130.xml

Kraken: Yes, I knew that. Bear in mind that a. Blyton is dead and b. Prices inflate all the time. Of course, I don't want to turn discussion into competition, so I was merely remarking.

i know that Dumbledore being gay has already been brought up, but this is ridiculous: Schools are banning the books at a amazing pace!
The books have faced calls to be banned in Canada, generally on the grounds that they could lure children to the occult and witchcraft.
http://www.thestar.com/entertainment/Books/article/269449

http://www.educationworld.com/a_admin/admin/admin157.shtml

why is it that people hate these books? i mean, the religion argument is obvious and now tack the whole gay thing onto it...yeesh!
i personally dont see why she told people that Dumbledore was gay at all, did she mention that Potter was straight?
my point: does it freaking matter that he was gay?
makes no sense man.
