First of all, welcome to FAF!
As to your question, I've been told that any word processor program would work...Though I could not even look at the code until I got my own hosting site and Slasher set everything up for me.
Though I'm sure our techies could help you (Zephyrus, Devari, sh0e, Beatles, and windhound).

Hi, Kyr. Welcome to FAF! Now, before we tell you anything, let's figure out if you want to play, or run your own FAF-like game.
If you just want to play, it's simple, just create your account, get your pass via email, and log on with the pass and user name you were sent. You don't need to download anything to play.
If you want to run your own FAF-like game, then downloading the code is the right place to start. However, I wouldn't advise opening code in word. I use notepad for righting html and php programs, there are other plain text editors that are nice, but it should be something like notepad. Word tends to save stuff in odd places, or so I'm told. Generally, it's just not as nice. Spell check gets quite anoying when most of what you're writing consists of stuff like "<h1> Page</h1>" and "print $string;", for example.
By the way, what your looking at is config.php, the configeration file for FAF. As the ".php" says, it's written in PHP code, and rather hard to translate if you have no experience with PHP.

ooo I just wanted to play the game *laughs*, but I already tried logging in yet whenever I put in the right password and username, it just shows the exact same screen after I enter it in. if I put in the wrong password, it says wrong password...
I don't even know whether I'm logged in or not, how do I know if I got logged in if it shows the exact same login screen after I enter in the right password and user?
it's like it only refreshed the page...

Try clicking the "Use Cookies?" box before logging in. Your browser may not support cookies.
For example, when I use the Konqueror web browser, I have to make sure that the game is not using cookies to check my login status. Otherwise I will get the same situation you just described.

Ok. It's pretty easy to figure out the general gameplay, actually. Strategy is a little tougher. One tip. Unless you're cashing (All markets and tents with a few huts, buying your troops off the market) tents are pretty much useless. Markets aren't the best way to go, either. Food selling is the easiest...
