Alrighty... I hope I made this right. First time with a poll.

The 3rd option is something that you should read about in the actual topic. I explained the basic idea for the Civ. specific heroes there.

Twould be fun to work on civ. specific heroes. The original hero set was just too powerful though.

Yeah...If anything, I'd volunteer to head that project. You or Neo could help with identifying heroes and balancing them, ect.

Well, I voted the original 9 and let me pick. The reason is I don't run the theme you guys do, and I really don't want to. The way you are proposing forces me to use a theme that I don't really want to use unless I don't update. If that is the case then that will make a fork of the code manditory. Also not something I would like to see.

This is kind of off topic here but I move to make the FAF code more of an engine and make it so that it is fully theme-able. It sort of is now, but requires a bit of work still to do. The changes you are suggesting moves further away from where we are right now. Not that I don't like change, but why not look at maybe adding new heroes to the game and making some changes to the existing ones so they are not so powerful.

Just my .02 cents in the bucket at this point...

Not really. Civ specific heros could be modified for your theme. Or left as they are, for that matter. All your heros are Redwall themed, and your theme certainly isn't Redwall. :P Other off - theme heros wouldn't be any different, though it would be a little more work to add/subtract for the number of races.

Though that could be a problem, as somebody who wanted to have a different number of races would have to add/subtract heros.

I think, in general terms, we were thinking of new features etc as things that would be "switchable". For example, if we added cities, we might add a config switch to have them on or off. Prevents forking, but makes the codebase very attractive and flexible. :)

At least, that's how I thought things would work...

You know, a binary switch in config.php that could turn on/off certain features at will. Like, perhaps, the stock market.

Bringing back that stock market would be cool. Have to rename it and set cash caps though.

In general, I don't really know how the code can be modified. So the best I can do is brain storm ideas and hope that 1/100 of them are quality. This wasn't totally me idea. Rudder brought up reinstating heroes in general, and I threw in the civ. specificness. I say if we build it, they will come! Or something like that...

Perhaps we could do both. Or, rather then have the original nine, perhaps modify some of them... Though... really, I kind of like Brome as he is. The only problem is the 1 person kills, but those aren't that easy, even with Brome. Forced standards and all that...

Maybe just up the other special heros to be able to compete, and add race specific heros in addition.

I like the old ones too. But I'd like to see something that had a bit more of a kick. Whats the point of everyone having heroes at the same time. Now we both make 25% more food. Bleah...

If they have an appearance ratio atleast, then that helps.
If no one can have the same thing, other than the same race, that helps too.
There could be a general healer dude that everyone could get...thats a possibilty. I'm only focusing on Civ specific now. There's no reason why we have to only do that. Mix and match and such. Only...You don't get to pick when and how.

Devari -- we can already disable pages at will due to disabled_pages. Since a PHP file is the basic unit of the game, this isn't as bad as it sounds.

The heroes were originally Greek gods and goddesses, which I quite liked. Are you interested in those, turock? Same descriptions and everything, just different (better) names.

I've held off voting for now.

I voted #3, Why not give it a go, if it don't work out then it can always be switched off and if someone else wants to use it in their game using the FAF source code then they can always enable it, so it won't be a complete waste of time coding it, someones bound to want to use it in their game I'm sure...

I am all for adding new things and new heroes is a nice idea. You brought up a good point Freen in that everyone has the same heroes every set, so whats to make it different. No reason why we can't try race specific heroes I guess as long as we also still have the option of the existing heroes as well.

Beatles, I have been meaning to change the hero names for a while now, just never got around to it. The names of greek gods and goddesses would be nice.

An idea kicked around on Ragnarok was to have heroes that essentially grew and specialised themselves with time. Duels between heroes and using heroes as special military commanders were two other ideas kicked around in conjunction with that. Never really got hammered out, though, in the end... And that is rather ambitious, to be sure.
