What is your favorite desktop environment? I tend to run KDE, but I'm not sure what the big difference between desktop environments is... They all work for me.
I'm on FreeBSD 5.3

A fancy thingamig that draws windows, the desktop, etc. that runs on top of X window.
I perfer KDE personaly on my brand new (ok, the stuff inside dates from '96) linux rig running RedHat 7.2. Overall, it seemed easier to use. Only problem is I have a low-res screen dateing from 1990 attached to it. Which means VGA only, which makes for a very crammed screen.

KDE, definitely. You should see the amount of design work going on at kdesktop.org. Only thing I like better about GNOME is the way it handles fonts.
My latest KDE came with a little button in the tray to adjust screen resolution on the fly, kind of like on some Macs and Windows-i. That made me quite happy.
Then again I haven't looked at GNOME enough, beyond its initial interface. They both have drag-and-drop functionality, their own filesystem, and configurable icons, I hear. KDE's GUI config tool seemed more intuitive to me. (Like heck am I going to learn to config a desktop via text files -- no time for that!)
[edit] I guess I forgot to mention the purpose. For everyday use, KDE. For presentations though, I prefer WindowMaker, for its simplicity and speed (and nerdiness). They say Enlightenment is good, but I haven't got used to its initially ugly interface. IceWM is what they say - minimalistic and rather ugly.
Here's to the best environment: don't run X at all.
