Geh. Went to go post something in the Random Links topic and... well, it appears to be gone.
Searched for a good 15 min. If it shows up I'll merge this one into it, but till then...

...

So I was listening to NPR via their little flash media player, saw a story titled "Cosmonaut Crashed Into Earth 'Crying In Rage'" and clicked "add to playlist" without thinking what it was. Bit later I heard the transmission and realized... clicked for the full story, and the associated picture confirmed my fears. Gee, thanks NPR
http://www.npr.org/blogs/krulwich/2011/03/21/134597833/cosmonaut-crashed-into-earth-crying-in-rage

Interesting story though... mostly sad - the arrogance of the Russian command, the selflessness of the pilot, and the family he left behind

Yeah, several topics were accidentally deleted or unpinned awhile back.

Oh, and the story is depressing as hell.

Oh no. =/ I hadn't heard about that story, but it reminds me when I found out about the lost cosmonauts.

The one story that stands out in my mind is a cosmonaut who was never able to return to Earth. He was actually flew into space before Yuri, but something went wrong during the mission, and the only reason we know that is between two Italian brothers picked up a recording of his last breaths. I read a comment somewhere that his capsule is leaving our solar system right about now. =/

The saddest part about all of this is that the Soviet Union tried to pretend these mistakes never happened, so they may have sacrificed dozens of more lives that we will never know about.

That story seems fishy to me. Not Russia covering up mistakes and lost lives, that sounds right, but people picking up heartbeats and breaths on a radio transmission from space. But I'll read it.

I looked around for Random Links too. Shame, it looks like it's gone. Maybe it got dumped into the spam dump at some point. Guess I should have fixed the spam problem sooner, eh?

A class of 9 students?

I think this requires more details... article omits the probable fact that the boy has some kind of mental deficiency.

Either way, he had a pointed stick and was trying to get at people behind a closed, locked door. Why is this kid still in a public school not getting help?

I don't care if its a 90 year old women with a handbag full of grapes. You don't do that and not expect to have the police spray you. Apparently this is like the 3rd time the police had been called to deal with this kid. Get him help instead of putting others in harm for the sake of "normalcy"

Oh I know, but the prevailing logic is that forcing (apparently) flawed/broken children into normalcy will somehow improve their lot in society, as well as improve society's perception of them.

I was merely being trendy when I made that last post.

In my heart I know how ridiculous that notion is.

OK... the kid is eight. No adult could deal with him? What is he, some kind of hormonal freak? I remember when I was 8, and my brother made me mad, he could just put his hand on my head and I couldn't hit him. An 8 year old should not require the police. Let alone pepper spray.

Apparently he had a pointy stick, but yeah. Smack him around. :D

Also Neo, I know. I was just going with it :D

It's also the fault of how they train policemen these days. They're way too cautious, and I can understand that with the amount of guns around, but a pointed stick -- come on, just box his ears and drag him home. As Volkov said.

Btw, to whoever wrote the article, "bust" does not mean what you think it means. You were trying to write "burst". Don't worry about it, first three spell-checks are on the house.

Nah. Its the fault of the sue-happy my-little-muffin-never-does-anything-wrong parents.

Otherwise the police wouldn't have been called over an 8 year old acting up, the teacher would have slapped the twit upside the head. It was an 8 year old, not exactly hard to subdue with force

The pepper spray was actually kinda smart, it immediately ended it. Otherwise the police would have had to restrain him until he calmed down, and who knows how long that would have taken - plus it increases chance of injury, mostly to the kid.

The fact that the mother and kid did TV interviews is also irking and kinda stupid on their part. There's no way they come out looking good, the kid's a psycho and the mom has no parenting skill. Its rewarding bad behavior with a ton of attention.

Another example - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fiLgqd-DwJA
The fact that this altercation was newsworthy and that a committee was called to determine if the vice-principal acted correctly is ... sad.

Edit, thanks Neo...
