The American edition has a tariff on the letter 'u' or something.

The Kraken, which is found primarily in Scandinavian myth, was a huge sea creature. It was said to lie at the bottom of the sea for a long time and then it would rest at the surface....Like the Midgard serpent in the Norse myths, the Kraken was supposed to rise to the surface at the end of the world.

Do they really dumb down the language? Search and replace Americanization of the words?

That's ridiculous. Let the words be free! FREEDOM, MY BROTHERS!

Kraken - C'mon, nobody actually wants to discuss the book, do they? ;)

Well, that's why it's a "US edition". Most books don't have "US editions", but apparently it was felt it would make this more popular. So the -ogue's kicked the bucket and became -og's, ouX's became oX's, etc. Bogey became booger, etc (that was in the first book, actually). I believe there are no other significant changes.

Oh wait, actually, I think they made the US edition have a happy ending. :P

Actually, it is a bit strange, because no foreign sitcom (except some Canadian sitcoms) is ever broadcast directly on American television (except on PBS, the Pan Britannia Station) without being "remade" (with varying degrees of success). The last time it happened was the 60s* and perhaps 70s. US shows are of course broadcast freely in other English-speaking countries, but the US won't tolerate foreign sitcoms (even though it tolerates foreign movies fine).

* The Avengers was partly funded by American television for the colour Emma Peel series.

Yes, that's the primary difference between the Canadian and other Commonwealth editions. "All was well, eh."

Why discuss the plot? We're not potterheads for the most part. :P

Well, in the one I read, it was not very Americanized, it had "u"s. It also said bogey instead of booger and other stuff like that. I could definitely tell it was written by a Brit.

Strange, Volkov. I've definitely seen editions with the spelling changed of the first book. Not sure about the others, then.

well the biggest change i noticed was the title of the first book which in Britian was called Harry Potter and the Philosiphers Stone and here in America it was called Harry Potter and the Socerers Stone.

eh?

but i agree with Popov; one could tell it was written by a Brit.

Hmm, maybe in the very first book, I haven't read it in at least 2 years, but I know in the 3 final books in the series, the spelling was definitely the British version.

Hm, well, the American version of the first book did have a title change, as Kraken said... Perhaps they did that for the earlier books and ceased the practice later on?
