If the government owned the means of production, the price would be that high as a result of inefficiencies that a lack of market competition allow to happen. Either that, or we would have something like when Jimmy Carter set a price limit on gas, rationing or an utter lack of supply.

Ah, but is that the case with USPS? No. It's because the government competes. Taxpayers keep the corporations cheap, corporations keep taxpayers efficient. It's only reasonable to have a stake in directing the market if by nothing else than competition.
