I still say it's the lack of training... now if he'd come at them with a blueberry or a banana, they would have known how to disarm him... with a 10-ton weight.
Apparently he had a pointy stick, but yeah. Smack him around.
Ooo... a pointy stick. How terrifying. LOL.
The fact that this altercation was newsworthy and that a committee was called to determine if the vice-principal acted correctly is ... sad.
Agreed.
How about I wave a poker at you and threaten to run you with it. Even an 8 year old can do damage to a classmate or an adult if it hits a squishy spot, which happens to be a large area of people's bodies.
The pepper spray was perfect. I really disagree on the lack of training here. That was perfect and age appropriate.

LMAO. Though wasn't the banana where he shoots them?

If it was you, I might be worried. An 8 year old? You grab the stick and take it away.

If you can choose a winner based on highest average preference, that seems to make better sense to me than their current system.
If one person gets 10% of the vote, but that happens to be the highest among all candidates, that seems unfair. Plus it kind of makes the individual vote even more meaningless.

The only thing I don't like about all non-FPTP systems is that it encourages parties as above MPs. Of course, so do things like party discipline and the party whips, and I don't like those either.
Single Transferable Vote doesn't encourage parties about MPs, if I remember correctly. We had two referendums (referenda?) about it in BC, but both failed.
Practically speaking, the party system is here to stay in most Westminister-style parliaments. Accepting that, I'd far rather have a pro-rep system that more fairly allocates seats. FPTP encourages a two-party voting dynamic, which I can't say I'm very fond of.

Agreed, I seem to remember reading (or hearing from you?) about voting systems that were better than AV at balancing party and individual.
The party system is here to stay, but the power of individual Members can still be strengthened or weakened, and I can only imagine AV to weaken it.
Prior to this latest British government, I would have been all for AV there, but if there's something this coalition has shown apart from the fact that the Lib Dems, whom I would not trust as a sole party of government (and neither would the British voter), can't even be trusted to exert a moderating influence in a coalition, for better or worse. And part of that is down to party discipline.
So at this point, I see that A. coalitions, which AV will encourage, actually aren't all that helpful in a system with strong party traditions, and B. parties are already way too strong (as if we needed more proof). So I am no longer convinved AV would help things.
